Asian Art Biennale 2024 in Taichung to Explore Power of Becoming
The Asian Art Biennale 2024 will open on November 16 at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in Taichung, Taiwan. Curator Fang Yen Hsiang reveals the theme centers on the concept of "force" or "power of becoming" in a world facing multifaceted crises, including the rise of generative AI. The exhibition will explore three levels: new ecological and technological realities, spaces of habitation from ethical land approaches to colonialism, and contemporary resistance movements across Asia under uncertainty. Artists are selected based on aesthetic expression, depth of inquiry, and ability to foster creative dialogues aligned with the theme. The biennale engages with Taichung through site-specific works inspired by the city's hydrology, urban decline, and the revitalization of ASEAN Square by the Southeast Asian community. Community projects, film screenings, and music events are planned in collaboration with local associations. For children and students, participatory workshops, performances, and conferences are being organized with local educational institutions. Fang describes East Asia's contemporary art scene as diverse, institutionalized, and driven by national cultural policies, with dynamics synchronized to social structures. The biennale aims to foster dialogue across Asian cultures through artworks that inherently carry multicultural roots, supplemented by transnational online panels, reading events, and collaborations with Taiwanese media platforms.
