Ashmolean Museum unveils first exhibition of Colonel Impey's colonial photographs of India
The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is hosting its inaugural exhibition dedicated to photographs and negatives from its archives, showcasing previously unseen works of India by Colonel Eugene Clutterbuck Impey (1830–1904). Impey, who was part of the East India Company (EIC), arrived in India in 1851 and took part in the 1857 uprising. Following the EIC's dissolution in 1858, he served as a political agent in Rajasthan until his return to Britain in 1878. He published 81 photographs in 'Delhi, Agra, and Rajpootana' in 1865. The exhibition features 247 of his glass negatives, with an additional 150 at the Bodleian Library, and runs until 13 December. Curator Mallica Kumbera Landrus emphasizes Impey's documentation of significant sites, including hill-stations and sacred locations.
