Asger Jorn's Situationalist House in Liguria Becomes a Museum
In 1954, Danish artist Asger Jorn moved to Albisola, Liguria, at the invitation of Enrico Baj. Initially homeless, he stayed in a tent and later with Lucio Fontana before purchasing two ruins in 1957 for one million lire. He transformed them into a home and studio embodying his anti-functionalist architecture, inspired by Erik Lundberg. The house features mosaics, murals, and a garden with recycled materials. Jorn was assisted by local worker Berto Gambetta. After Jorn's death in 1973, the property was donated to the municipality of Albissola Marina, with usufruct to Gambetta and his wife until 1999. Restored by 2014, Casa Jorn now operates as a museum and research center, hosting residencies and interventions by contemporary artists. Curator Daniele Panucci oversees the site, which is part of a diffuse museum network.
