arXiv Paper Traces Evolutionary Origins of Values to Address AI Alignment and Sentience

ai-technology · 2026-08-06

A recent study published on arXiv (ID: 2608.03361v1) investigates the evolutionary roots of values to tackle issues related to AI alignment, sentience, and existential threats. The researchers contend that values in living organisms arise from autopoiesis, the self-sustaining mechanisms of life, and are influenced by natural selection through a hierarchy of 'vicarious selectors.' In contrast, Large Language Models (LLMs) are characterized as allopoietic and allotelic, generating outputs for others and deriving their objectives from user input rather than independent motivations. As a result, LLMs do not possess the inherent drives for self-preservation, dominance, or competition for resources that contribute to existential risks, nor do they have the physical vulnerability necessary for experiencing feelings or suffering. Nonetheless, since LLMs analyze statistical patterns from human-created text, they may inadvertently embody human values and biases. This paper adopts a cross-disciplinary perspective, integrating insights from evolutionary biology and AI research to enhance conversations surrounding AI safety and ethics.
