Artworks in the Background of the Trump-Zelensky Photo at St. Peter's

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

A widely circulated photograph of Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky during Pope Francis's funeral at St. Peter's Basilica has drawn attention not only for its political implications but also for the significant artworks visible in the background. The image, taken at the beginning of the left nave near the counter-facade, shows the two leaders in conversation against a backdrop of marble floors and the interior face of Giacomo Manzù's "Porta della Morte." Commissioned by Pope John XXIII in 1964, this bronze door features a frieze depicting a moment from the Second Vatican Council, with Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa paying homage to the pope. Another angle reveals the Cappella del Battesimo, housing the basilica's baptismal font made from a reused porphyry basin traditionally believed to come from Emperor Hadrian's tomb. The font is topped with a gilded bronze cover designed by Carlo Fontana (1692–1697). Behind it hangs a large mosaic reproduction of Carlo Maratta's "Battesimo di Cristo" (1697), the original now in Santa Maria degli Angeli. The floor near the chapel features the coat of arms of Pope John Paul II, installed in 1994. The article reflects on the contrast between the intimate meeting and the grand sacred space, as well as the historical tensions between East and West symbolized by the Ukrainian conflict.
