ArtVerona 2023: LAB Project Showcases Italy's Independent Art Scene

ArtVerona, held from October 13 to 15, 2023, dedicates a section to mapping Italy's independent scene with the third edition of the LAB project, curated by Giulia Floris. Four independent spaces participate: Giuseppefraugallery (Carbonia Iglesias), Villa Filanda Antonini (Treviso), P.I.A. (founded 2017 by Jonatah Manno and Valeria Raho), and IUNO (directed by Cecilia Canziani and Ilaria Gianni). LAB includes a Corner Library for the second year, with main partner CASTRO (founded 2018 in Rome) presenting its new free library on experimental education. A talk on October 15 will discuss collaborations with local institutions. Floris emphasizes the synergy between non-profit and commercial sectors, stating that separating them is anachronistic. She invites new spaces each year to highlight different aspects of independent realities. Giuseppefraugallery is a collective (Eleonora di Martino, Pino Giampà, Riccardo Oi) merging art and activism, founding a Civic School of Contemporary Art in 2014. Villa Filanda Antonini, founded 2021 by Giulio Feltrin, focuses on artist residencies and interdisciplinary dialogue. P.I.A. offers a high-level course in visual arts. IUNO aims to dismantle authoritarian dynamics through slow, community-based projects.
