Artribune's Christmas book guide: from Ver Sacrum to Hito Steyerl
Artribune's Christmas book guide presents seven art publications released in 2018. The selection includes a reprint of Ver Sacrum (Skira), the journal of the Vienna Secession (1898-1903) edited by Gustav Klimt, Max Kurzweil, and Ludwig Hevesi, with 450 images curated by Valerio Terraroli. Hito Steyerl's Duty Free Art (Johan and Levi) collects her essays on free ports, asymmetric warfare, hackers, and OMA's ties to the Assad regime; Steyerl topped Art Review's Power List in 2017. Pino Pascali's photography is explored in a catalog (Postmedia Books) from a recent exhibition in Polignano a Mare, while Anna D'Elia's biography Pino Pascali (Peccolo) covers the artist's life from childhood to early death, including interviews with Marisa Volpi and Carla Lonzi. Giovanni Iovane and Sergio Risaliti's Gustav Klimt (Bompiani) examines Klimt through contemporary art, Freud, and Bruno Bettelheim. Eletta Flocchini's La Medusa inquieta (Massetti Rodella) traces Lucio Fontana's Medusa mosaic from Casa Tassara (1954) in Breno to Christie's London (2006, £545,600), then to the Park Hyatt Milan, and finally to Patrizio Bertelli's collection at the Torre restaurant in largo Isarco. Fernando Costa's monograph (5 Continents) documents the Portuguese-born artist's collages made from road signs, inspired by César.
