Artribune receives insults and threats after criticizing public art exhibition in Florence

opinion-review · 2026-04-26

Artribune published a critical review of the public art exhibition "Il Cielo Sopra Firenze" curated by Emanuele Giannelli, installed near Florence's Duomo. The review criticized the haphazard arrangement of sculptures. In response, the exhibition's press office sent a series of abusive WhatsApp messages to Artribune director Massimiliano Tonelli, including insults, threats, and demands to remove the article. The press office also sent a formal legal notice (PEC) demanding the article's removal without justification. The exhibition is organized by the Regione Toscana and the Opera Medicea Laurenziana, which manages the Basilica of San Lorenzo. Artist Marco Lodola, one of the participants, also criticized the installation, calling it "terrible" that his work was placed alongside others without curatorial logic. Artribune notes that the press office's behavior damages the reputation of the institutions involved and calls for accountability.
