Artribune cover features six-toed foot by IED student Tommaso Radaelli

Artribune continues its collaboration with IED Milan for the sixth cover of the Fragile Surfaces series. The cover image, created by Tommaso Radaelli, a second-year Illustration student at IED Milan, adds a sixth toe to the right foot of Christ in Andrea Mantegna's Lamentation over the Dead Christ, housed at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The work, titled prompt=mantegna_cristo_morto.jpg, critiques AI's inability to realistically render human hands and feet and its lack of meaning attribution. Radaelli, 23, from Milan, previously studied statistics before switching to illustration. He achieved the effect through live photography and image editing rather than AI, reclaiming an AI-like imperfection in a man-made process. The project involved students from IED Milan's Visual Arts school exploring themes such as reality vs. fiction, AI limits, and human-AI hybridity. Participants included Elif Cigirgil, Carlotta Mutti, Sahar Snir, Emma Scarafiotti, and Alessia D'Acquisto. Additionally, Sound Design and Video Design students created live performances at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan on June 15-16, 2023, addressing AI and multimedia arts.
