ArtReview Summer 2024 Issue Explores Place, Dreams, and Politics
The Summer 2024 issue of ArtReview is now available, featuring a range of articles that examine the concept of place through multisensory art, dream manipulation, and political imagery. Berlin-based Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh discusses his multisensory works, including honey beer and soundscapes that capture a place's audio DNA, emphasizing that nonvisual elements resonate emotionally. Carsten Höller presents a new dream factory: a hotel room inside a museum designed to influence visitors' subconscious, developed with MIT dream-science researcher Adam Haar. J.J. Charlesworth interviews them about ethics and control. Sarah Jilani writes on photographer Ahlam Shibli, whose work documents Palestine's occupation, violence, and displacement. Alexander Leissle explores Joyce Joumaa's video art on migration and bureaucracy from Canada. Other features include Jessica Lanay speaking with US filmmaker Ephraim Asili, Alastair Kwan's artist project on congee, Orit Gat critiquing Apple's iPad advert, and Anakwa Dwamena examining David Adjaye's architectural legacy in Accra. Reviews cover Joan Jonas at MoMA New York, Beryl Cook and Tom of Finland at Studio Voltaire London, Roni Horn at Ludwig Museum Cologne, Yoko Terauchi at Hagiwara Projects Tokyo, and more. Book reviews include Orlando Whitfield's All That Glitters and China Miéville's adaptation of Keanu Reeves's BRZRKR.
