ArtReview's Future Greats 2025 spotlights emerging image-makers across diverse media

ArtReview's 2025 Future Greats issue marks a new approach by focusing specifically on artists working with image-making across various media. For the first time in its 18-year history, the annual feature narrows its scope to examine contemporary practices in photography, lens-based media, and digital image creation. The publication asked selectors—including artists, curators, and writers—to nominate emerging talents deserving greater attention. Selected artists include Kathryn Garcia, known for ritualistic geometric drawings; Tshepiso Mazibuko, who creates ghostly hometown portraits on expired analog film; and Yan Jiacheng, who digitally stitches images into panoramic communal portraits. Other featured artists are Léonard Pongo, Aineki Traverso, Alexey Shylk, Rachelle Anayansi Mozman Solano, Tiyan Baker, Marina Woisky, and Samuel Hindolo. Selectors who nominated them include Roger Ballen, Karen Lamassonne, David Claerbout, Justine Kurland, Lai Fei, Dean Sameshima, Adeline Chia, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Oliver Basciano, and Martin Herbert. The issue reflects ArtReview's ongoing effort to highlight artists who may lack major museum shows or biennial features, offering a snapshot of evolving artistic values and media practices.
