ArtReview's Frieze New York 2013 Fair Report: Misunderstandings, Artworks, and Collector Encounters

At Frieze New York 2013, ArtReview encountered a Chinese art critic who praised Mission, later discovered to be Mission foods offering Chinese-American cuisine rather than a gallery. This confusion occurred as ArtReview prepared to launch ArtReview: Asia at Art Basel Hong Kong in two weeks. Gabriel Kuri's Untitled polling table (consumed breakfast) (2013) at Esther Schipper's stand featured resin and latex breakfasts in polling booths, blending art with consumption themes. Jonathan Horowitz's Pillow Talk (2002) at Gavin Brown's enterprise displayed 96 inkjet prints of pillowcases with famous couple names from Adam and Eve to Mary and [blank], including R2-D2 and C-3PO, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Matthew Barney and Björk. A British collector asked ArtReview about 'Jeff', referring to Jeff Koons' Gazing Ball exhibition at David Zwirner, featuring white plaster casts of classical garden sculptures with mirrored blue balls. ArtReview described the show's technical perfection and cultural history knowledge but noted a sense of blankness. Jonathan Monk's Back in 5 Minutes (2013) at Galleri Nicolai Wallner included a c-print of a glamour girl and a modernist chair with a note, playing on presence and absence.
