ArtReview Hosts Online Roleplaying Game Set 8,000 Years in Future for Brent Biennial

digital · 2026-04-20

On 12 October 2020 at 6pm, ArtReview will host an online roleplaying game created by British artist David Blandy, set in Harlesden 8,000 years in the future. The event features Blandy, critic Gabrielle de la Puente, and publisher Sarah Shin, with discussion chaired by ArtReview editor-at-large Oliver Basciano before gameplay begins. This marks the first public programming collaboration between ArtReview and the inaugural Brent Biennial, which coincides with Brent being named London Borough of Culture 2020. Blandy developed his futuristic vision of the borough after sea level rise and forest reclamation with young people from Roundwood Youth Centre and Capital City Academy. Over 20 commissioned artworks inspired by local cultures will be unveiled for the biennial. The event will be conducted via Zoom, requiring RSVP to rsvp@artreview.com. Blandy's practice explores cultural influences through performance and video, drawing from roleplay games, hip hop, and manga. His work has been exhibited at Tate London, FACT Liverpool, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and Serpentine Gallery among others. De la Puente reviews games through The White Pube platform, while Shin founded the New Suns feminist literary festival at Barbican Centre and co-founded Ignota Books.
