ArtReview February 2025 Issue Spotlights Future Greats in Image-Making
ArtReview's February 2025 issue features its annual Future Greats selection, this year focusing on ten 'image-makers' working across photography, painting, video, and collage. The artists were nominated by established figures: Yan Jiacheng (selected by Lai Fei) appears on the cover; Kathryn Garcia (by Dean Sameshima); Tshepiso Mazibuko (by Lindokuhle Sobekwa); Léonard Pongo (by Roger Ballen); Aineki Traverso (by Karen Lamassonne); Alexey Shlyk (by David Claerbout); Rachelle Anayansi Mozman Solano (by Justine Kurland); Tiyan Baker (by Adeline Chia); Marina Woisky (by Oliver Basciano); and Samuel Hindolo (by Martin Herbert). The issue also launches a new series, 'Eternal Returns', republishing historical texts with annotations; the first is Lawrence Alloway's 1956 essay 'The Robot & the Arts', which references the Whitechapel Gallery's This is Tomorrow exhibition inaugurated by a robot named Robby. Additionally, Stephanie Bailey profiles Palestinian artist Khaled Jarrar, whose work includes a State of Palestine passport stamp and olive oil titled Unknown. Martin Herbert interviews Berlin-based Vietnamese painter Anh Trần about her abstract expressionist canvases. Exhibition reviews cover Electric Dreams at Tate Modern, Digital Witness at LACMA, Raven Chacon's Aviary at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Prospect 6 in New Orleans, MANZAR at the National Museum of Qatar, and the Bangkok Art Biennale.
