ArtReview Asia Summer 2021 Issue Explores Feminist Protest, Queer Optics, and Gulf Futures

publication · 2026-04-20

The summer 2021 edition of ArtReview Asia highlights Kurdish artist and activist Zehra Doğan, who was incarcerated for nearly three years starting in 2017 due to her work with the all-female news outlet JİNHA. During her imprisonment, she produced art and a novel that were smuggled out disguised as laundry, centering on the struggles of Kurdish women. The issue also features Gayatri Gopinath's analysis of Shahzia Sikander and Julie Mehretu's queer perspectives, with Sikander's exhibit at the Morgan Library & Museum and Mehretu's retrospective at the Whitney Museum. Ayman Zedani explores the natural collaboration of the Gulf, while the publication confronts anti-Asian bias through the works of filmmaker Richard Fung and artists Hamishi Farah and Arahmaiani. Additionally, Thai curator Abhijan Toto shares projects influenced by James C. Scott's Zomia concept.
