ArtReview Asia Spring 2022 Issue Features Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Shubigi Rao, and Others
The Spring 2022 issue of ArtReview Asia has been released, highlighting contributions from several prominent artists and writers. Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a leading Thai film director and visual artist, discusses his latest feature film Memoria, shot in Colombia, which reflects political challenges in Thailand amid state censorship. Following youth-led protests in 2020 and 2021, he expresses newfound hope about survival and memory. Singapore-based artist Shubigi Rao, representing Singapore at the 2022 Venice Biennale and curating the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in November, examines book and library destruction, finding moments of hope and evidence of hate. American artist Michael Wang is profiled for uncovering planetary connections in waste from a Chinese lake, while German-Korean painter Hyun-Sook Song's controlled paintings, with brushstrokes that can be counted, reveal a political consciousness shaped by nearly five decades of practice and cultural influences from East and West. The issue includes extensive previews of spring exhibitions across Asia, reviews of fiction by Gina Apostol, Pankaj Mishra, Yoko Towada, and Melissa Fu, and assessments of the 10th Asia-Pacific Triennial, the Thailand Biennale, and a new film by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. Writer Max Crosbie-Jones contributes an interview with Weerasethakul, and critics Venus Lau and Wenny Teo explore the works of Wang and Song, respectively.
