ArtReview and BACKLIT launch Remark, a new art criticism platform for the East Midlands
ArtReview and BACKLIT in Nottingham have introduced Remark, a platform commissioning new writing on visual art in the East Midlands, launching on 21 May. Originally planned for May 2020, the initiative was delayed by COVID-19. It aims to support coverage of the region's vibrant art scenes, which include public venues, commercial galleries, and artist-run spaces, often overlooked compared to major art centers. Remark will publish a fortnightly newsletter featuring reviews and previews of exhibitions and events, written by both emerging and established writers. Concurrently, in partnership with Nottspoke, Nottingham Trent University, and the University of Nottingham, the project offers workshops, mentoring, and editorial work to develop writers for ArtReview's global audience. Arts Council England, along with the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, provided support for Remark. The launch coincides with the easing of UK lockdowns, allowing galleries to reopen and artists to exhibit again.
