exhibition · 2026-04-20

Between November 9, 2019, and February 29, 2020, the Modern Art Base in Shanghai hosted an exhibition titled 'Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail.' This event was curated by ArtReview and ArtReview Asia, with backing from Modern Art Base and sponsorship from Mercedes-Benz. It featured a remarkable 70-year archive from ArtReview and a six-year collection from ArtReview Asia, focusing on how art magazines can serve as venues for critique and innovation through artist partnerships. On the ground floor, visitors could engage with Michael Lin's wallpaper piece from 2017, Domestique, alongside archival issues from 1949. The upper level showcased collaborative works from artists like Ming Wong, Heman Chong, and Superflex, highlighting the magazines' impact on the art scene.
