Artpress Publishes Interviews with American Modernist Critics

publication · 2026-04-23

Artpress has released a two-volume collection of interviews with American art critics who shaped modernism. Volume 1 focuses on figures who defined the modernist discourse, including Clement Greenberg, whose formalist approach dominated the 1950s and 1960s. Greenberg famously stated, 'Yes, there is good art and bad art, that is the essential point.' The next generation, Rosalind Krauss and Michael Fried, built on formalism before diverging—Krauss turned to photography, Fried considered the viewer's role. William Rubin, longtime curator at MoMA, explored modernism's ties to primitivism. The volume includes interviews by Ann Hindry, Catherine Millet, and Saul Ostrow, with a preface by Millet.
