Artpress Mourns the Loss of Critic Maïten Bouisset

Maïten Bouisset, a French art critic and longtime contributor to artpress, died on February 3, 2020. She began her career writing for Le Quotidien de Paris and Le Matin de Paris, later serving as deputy editor-in-chief of Beaux-Arts magazine from 1989 to 1992. Bouisset was a regular collaborator with artpress into the 2000s, known for rigorous investigative reporting on the art world's structures and a deep interest in sociology. She conducted a major interview with Raymonde Moulin, wrote on art school reforms, assessed the Fonds régionaux d'art contemporain (FRAC), and explored whether museums could do without painting. She was a member of the French bureau of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). Bouisset authored books including interviews with Francis Bacon (1996, Éditions Carré), a monograph on Robert Combas (1999, Fall), and a reference work on Arte Povera (1994, Regard). She also wrote articles on artists Daniel Spoerri, Gloria Friedmann, and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
