artpress Interviews with René Girard Collected in New Publication

publication · 2026-05-01

A new book titled "Les grands entretiens d'artpress. René Girard" compiles interviews with the French philosopher and anthropologist René Girard, originally published in artpress magazine. Girard, known for his mimetic theory, first articulated the concept of "triangular desire" in his 1961 book "Mensonge romantique et vérité romanesque" through an analysis of major literary works. His subsequent work "La Violence et le Sacré" (1972) examined the scapegoat mechanism in archaic religions. The interviews span from 1978, when he first discussed the importance of biblical texts in artpress, to later conversations. The volume includes a preface by Benoît Chantre and features interviews conducted by Jacques Henric, François Lagarde, and Philippe Muray. The book presents Girard's thought as a key to understanding contemporary violence.
