artpress Dossier on Indigenous Contemporary Arts Expanded with Study Days

publication · 2026-04-24

The French contemporary art magazine artpress published a dossier titled "Autochtones dans le monde de l'art" (Indigenous Peoples in the Art World) in its March-April 2021 issue (n°486-487), coordinated by art historian Morgan Labar. In parallel, Labar organized two international study days titled "Arts contemporains et indigénéités" at the École normale supérieure in Paris on March 25-26, 2021. A video of Labar's introduction to the colloquium is available online. By the end of April 2021, a selection of presentations from these study days will be uploaded to the ENS website, including: Labar's introduction; Sophie Guignard on indigeneity in North America as seen by Indigenous photographers; Sofia Gotti on Indigenous worldviews in Paraguayan contemporary art; an interview between Hervé Télémaque and Philippe Dagen on indigeneity; Morgana Herrera on the Peruvian Amazon scene; Marie-Charlotte Franco on the evolution of Indigenous issues in Canadian museums; and Aurélie Journée-Duez on performances by James Luna and Erica Lord. The cover image is Kent Monkman's painting "Miss Chief's Wet Dream" (2018, acrylic on canvas, 366 x 732 cm, collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia).
