publication · 2026-04-23

Artpress magazine has released a special publication titled 'Les grands entretiens: Le Musée d’art moderne de New York,' compiling interviews with past and present directors of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Founded in 1929, MoMA is a leading institution of modern art. The volume features conversations with William Rubin, a renowned art historian specializing in Picasso, Dada, and Surrealism, who organized the landmark exhibition 'Primitivism in 20th Century Art'; his successor Kirk Varnedoe, who curated the first exhibition blending art with popular culture, advertising, and media, 'High and Low'; current director Glenn D. Lowry in dialogue with Alfred Pacquement, former director of the Musée national d’art moderne at Centre Pompidou; and Quentin Bajac, former curator at Centre Pompidou recently appointed head of MoMA’s photography department. The interviews were conducted by Étienne Hatt, Catherine Millet, Alfred Pacquement, Margit Rowell, and Robert Storr, with a preface by Ann Hindry. The publication includes a quote from Lowry: 'Modern art museums are in a way experiments.'
