Artpress Anthology Traces Subjective Photography from Klein to d'Agata

publication · 2026-04-24

The French art magazine artpress has published a new anthology titled "Les grands entretiens: La photographie. Écritures subjectives," collecting interviews with key photographers who shaped the medium's contemporary phase. The volume features conversations with William Klein and Robert Frank, whose expressive approaches in the 1950s liberated photography from documentary transparency. It also includes Raymond Depardon, whose practice remains tied to reportage; Arnaud Claass, known for his contemplative, literary gaze; Ralph Gibson, whose deceptively simple compositions convey unease; and Antoine d'Agata, who treats photography as a "martial art." The book's preface is written by Michel Poivert, and the interviews are conducted by Anne Bertrand, Léa Bismuth, Michel Nuridsany, Patrick Roegiers, and Catherine Strasser. The anthology explores transatlantic photographic exchanges and the relationship between photography and cinema. A quote from Robert Frank opens the volume: "The spirit of a work can come from an inspiration that goes against the image."
