artpress Anthology on American Postmodernist Criticism
A new volume from artpress, 'La critique américaine. Après le modernisme', collects key American critics who shaped postmodernist discourse. The book features essays by Rosalind Krauss, Michael Fried, Arthur Danto, Leo Steinberg, Dave Hickey, and Fredric Jameson. Krauss and Fried, both trained under Clement Greenberg, evolved their approaches: Krauss developed the notion of the index and used Georges Bataille's concept of the informe, while Fried shifted his study of the spectator's role to photography. Arthur Danto is credited with the most thorough analysis of Andy Warhol's work, and Leo Steinberg tackled themes breaking with formalist puritanism. Dave Hickey incorporated popular cultural forms, and Fredric Jameson was among the first to theorize 'the cultural logic of late capitalism'. The volume includes a preface by Catherine Millet and contributions from Jean-Joseph Goux, Eleanor Heartney, Jacques Henric, Ann Hindry, and Magali Nachtergael. A quote from Arthur Danto reflects on the end of art.
