publication · 2026-05-04

The ARTnews Top 200 Collectors 2018 list ranks the world's most influential art collectors, topped by Russian magnate Roman Abramovich, followed by Indonesian Haryanto Adikoesoemo and Iranian Mohammed Afkhami. Abramovich, with an estimated fortune of $11 billion, co-founded Moscow's Garage Museum of Contemporary Art with ex-wife Dasha Zhukova. He is rumored to have purchased a Francis Bacon triptych for $86 million and a Lucian Freud work for $33.6 million. Adikoesoemo, president of PT AKR Corporindo, is set to open the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MACAN) in Nusantara on November 17, with a collection featuring Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter, and Affandi. Afkhami, founder of MA Partners DMCC and Magenta Capital Services, has amassed around 400 works since 2004, focusing on contemporary Iranian artists like Mohammad Ehsai and Shirin Neshat. The list also includes Bernard Arnault (LVMH), whose Fondation Louis Vuitton opened in 2014 with a Frank Gehry-designed museum; Peter Brant, who announced a new New York space; and Italian collectors Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (over 1,500 works), Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli (whose Fondazione Prada museum in Milan added a 60-meter tower by Rem Koolhaas), Augusto Perfetti, the Maramotti family (Max Mara), and Ernesto Bertarelli.
