ARTnews and Art in America Name 100 Best Artworks About America

In anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the United States, ARTnews and Art in America have unveiled a compilation of the 100 most significant artworks related to America, spanning from before 1776 to today. Among the highlighted pieces are rafa esparza's 2019 performance 'bust: indestructible columns', the Bureau of Inverse Technology's 'BIT Plane' from 1997–98, Bruce Nauman's neon artwork 'American Violence' created between 1981 and 1982, Nam June Paik's 1995 video installation 'Electronic Superhighway', and Charles Willson Peale's 1819 portrait of Yarrow Mamout. Additional notable works include Georgia O'Keeffe's 1943 piece 'Pelvis with Distance', Martha Rosler's photomontage series, and Ernie Barnes's 1976 'Sugar Shack'. Editors such as Maximilíano Durón and Tessa Solomon curated the list.
