Artnet's Top 100 Art Collectors List for 2016
Artnet has released its annual list of the 100 most influential contemporary art collectors, organized alphabetically. The list reaffirms the dominance of US collectors, who constitute the majority, reflecting American philanthropy and support for the arts. Notable new entries include Jorge Pérez, who donated $40 million in cash and artworks to the Pérez Art Museum Miami; the Samdani couple from Bangladesh, building a museum and organizing the Dhaka Art Summit; Laurence and Patrick Seguin from France; Temisi Shyllon, a Yoruba prince from Nigeria with Africa's largest private collection of 7,000 pieces; Theo Danjuma, son of a Nigerian general based in London; Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani from Qatar, reportedly spending €1 billion annually on art; and from the US, Steve Tisch, Derek and Christen Wilson, Jeremy Zimmer, Paul Allen, and Lawrence Benenson. New entries from India include the Ambani couple, from Germany Désiré Feuerle, and from Japan Hikonobu Ise. Italian collectors are exclusively female: Miuccia Prada, with over 900 works and the Fondazione Prada in Milan and Venice, and Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, whose Turin foundation celebrates 25 years in 2017. Leonardo DiCaprio, of Italian origin, also enters the list, having won an Oscar in 2016. The list includes established names like the Abramovic, Broad, Rubell, Margulies families, Julia Stoscheck, Arnault, and Pinault.
