ArtMill Fosters Global Creativity and Environmental Advocacy in Czech Countryside
Barbara Benish established the NGO Art Dialogue in 2004, which operates ArtMill, a 17th-century renovated flourmill and granary in the Czech countryside near Šumava National Park. This international destination hosts artists, scientists, environmentalists, writers, and students for collaboration and creation. Art Dialogue originated from the 1989 exhibition Dialogue: Prague/Los Angeles, co-organized with Zdenka Gabalová, marking the first joint show of Czech, Slovak, and American art in fifty years amid political tension before the Velvet Revolution. ArtMill's programs include summer camps, artist residencies, and workshops, attracting participants like Kim Abeles, Keiji Shinohara, and Martin Zet, who led immersive environmental walks. In 2006, Vladimir Kokolia conducted a performance on a lake raft, while in 2010, Ilona Nemeth exhibited works on Central European identity at Galerie Califia, and Kristyna and Marek Milde installed In Tree Net. ArtMill evolved into the ArtMill Center for Sustainable Creativity, aligning with UN and UNESCO goals, and Benish advises the UN's Safe Planet Campaign on hazardous chemicals. The initiative uses art to communicate scientific issues like toxic chemicals and e-waste, promoting creativity as essential for sustainable development.
