ARTMargins Celebrates 10 Years of Hybrid Academic Publishing with MIT Press

publication · 2026-04-19

ARTMargins marks a decade since its print edition joined ARTMargins Online, launched by founding editors Sven Spieker, Angela Harutyunyan, and Octavian Esanu. The journal was conceived as an innovative art historical publication aiming to counter the euphoria of globalized art through diverse perspectives from artists, scholars, and critics. MIT Press has supported the publication from its inception, with additional financial and logistical backing from the University of California, Santa Barbara and the American University in Beirut for four years. The current editorial collective includes Karen Benezra, Pedro Erber, Elizabeth Harney, and Saloni Mathur alongside the founders. An evolving network of artists, art historians, curators, and critics has contributed to the journal's growth through collaboration and publication. The hybrid academic model has been tested against existing publications covering similar ground from different angles. Volume 10, Issue 3, pages 3-7, documents this anniversary reflection published on February 18, 2022. The editorial board expanded with colleagues who initially helped launch the journal.
