Artists Space Faces Four-Month Closure for Building Expansion, Delaying Cameron Rowland Exhibition

institutional · 2026-04-20

Zar Properties, the landlord of Artists Space, has compelled the New York non-profit to close its 38 Greene Street location for four months. This closure is necessary for constructing a 12,000 square-foot office penthouse expansion on top of the landmark building. Executive director and curator Stefan Kalmár reported receiving no clear timeline for the disruption from the landlords, nor any compensation offer for the inconvenience. As a result, the Cameron Rowland exhibition originally scheduled to open in September 2015 will be postponed by at least four months. While the Greene Street gallery space is closed, offices at 38 Greene Street will remain operational. Additionally, Artists Space Books & Talks at 55 Walker Street will continue to function normally. The situation was reported on September 25, 2015.
