Artists Reflect on Time During Quarantine in Artribune Feature

publication · 2026-04-27

Artribune published a feature titled 'Messaggi dalla quarantena. Gli artisti e il tempo' (Messages from Quarantine. Artists and Time) on June 2020, curated by Mercedes Auteri. The piece presents works and reflections from seven artists—Agnese Guido, Simone Di Franco, Francesca Polizzi, Enrico Salemi, Turiana Ferrara, and Sofía Rodríguez—responding to the altered perception of time during COVID-19 lockdowns. Guido's gouache 'Da Milano, per oggi, è tutto' (2020) depicts Milan's skyline from her balcony, blending humor with the surreal suspension. Di Franco's photograph 'Mercoledì degli assenti' (February 2020) captures an allegory of frustrated desire through shadows on shutters. Polizzi's wool and iron sculpture 'Vello d’oro' (2018) references the Greek myth of the Golden Fleece as a metaphor for memory and healing. Salemi continues his 'micrological' stippling technique on large surfaces, describing quarantine time as a 'parenthesis' within ordinary time. Ferrara's 'Silent Houses' series (2015) photographs nocturnal interiors, echoing the current stillness. Rodríguez produces daily watercolors and poems, such as 'Dia 21' (2020), exploring suspended time and existential change. The feature is part of a series on artistic responses to quarantine, with previous installments covering landscape, trauma, objects, nostalgia, change, home, and nature.
