Artists Reflect on Home and Quarantine in Artribune Series
Artribune's 'Messaggi dalla quarantena' series explores how artists perceive domestic space during lockdown. In the sixth installment, Mercedes Auteri curates contributions from Francesco Cuttitta, Giovanna Brogna Sonnino, Calusca, Guido Bagini, and Maria Domenica Rapicavoli. Cuttitta presents an acrylic self-portrait and a ceramic toilet sculpture, describing the bathroom as an intimate refuge. Brogna Sonnino shares black-and-white photographs from Favignana and Catania, emphasizing how small spaces can become home. Calusca's mixed-media work 'V112 Apocalypse in Bed/Box Room with Sacred Curtain in Fly' and a chair piece reflect on chaos and nostalgia. Bagini's abstract paintings and Corian sculptures explore futuristic worlds and the necessity of isolation. Rapicavoli's video 'My Ideal House' reveals domestic scenes as staged store displays, while her work-in-progress 'The Other: A Familiar Story' recounts a Sicilian woman's emigration to the US, touching on the 1912 Bread and Roses strike and the 1918-20 Spanish flu. The series is part of Artribune's newsletters: Incanti (art market), Render (urban regeneration), and PAX (cultural tourism).
