Artists & Mothers nonprofit tackles art world's lack of support for working parents

Since its inception in 2024, the nonprofit Artists & Mothers has been tackling the insufficient support for working mothers in the art sector by providing grants for nine months of childcare to artists in New York with children under the age of 3. Co-founded by artist Maria de Victoria and curator Julia Trotta, the organization boasts a board that includes artist Camille Henrot, gallerist Bridget Donahue, Maia Ruth Lee, Sarah Goulet, and Elizabeth Karp-Evans. Henrot remarked that the initiative is elevating the conversation about artist parents within the broader art community. De Victoria aspires for an art world characterized by care and equity. Trotta's main focus remains securing funding for the grants, while Goulet clarified that the organization is not merely a "mommy club." The group recently hosted its first gala, showcasing Ei Arakawa-Nash's Mega Please Draw Freely, and Goulet is eager for Arakawa-Nash's participation in the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, highlighting his journey as a queer parent.
