Artists in Quarantine: Balcony Art Project by L'Internationale

digital · 2026-04-27

Inspired by the Italian custom of balcony gatherings during the COVID-19 lockdown, a worldwide art initiative has emerged. Titled Artists in Quarantine and supported by L'Internationale—a consortium of museums that includes Reina Sofía (Madrid), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven), and contemporary art institutions in Warsaw and Antwerp—this project encourages artists to showcase their creations from balconies and windows. It draws inspiration from Sanja Iveković's 1979 performance 'Triangle,' where she protested Tito for 18 minutes from her balcony. Notable contributors include Babi Badalov, Osman Bozkurt, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, and others. The initiative examines the potential for domestic spaces to convey subversive messages, with updates shared bi-weekly on L'Internationale's social media until May 7.
