Artists Confront Quarantine Trauma in Artribune Feature
In an Artribune article by Mercedes Auteri, six artists—Alfonso Leto, Vlady, Linda Randazzo, Desideria Burgio, Angelo Di Bella, and Simone Sapienza—present works created during Italy's COVID-19 lockdown, exploring themes of trauma, grief, and death. Leto's "Vita sedentaria" (March 2020, oil and graffiti on broken slate, 120x90 cm) uses a Sicilian proverb to address captivity. Vlady's "Mascherina egoista" critiques mask shortages and black-market pricing. Randazzo's "Il trionfo della Morte" (2018, oil on canvas, 200x200 cm) reimagines a 1446 fresco at Mondello beach, highlighting society's taboo on death. Burgio's "Ritratto di Linda Randazzo sul suo letto" (2015, digital B&W photo) presents a funerary mask-like portrait. Di Bella's "Mary at the foot of the Holy Cross" (2020, oil on paper, 42x29 cm) uses painting as an imprint of pain. Sapienza's photographs from Vietnam (2017-2018) document caged animals and flower sellers, drawing parallels between communist-era claustrophobia and quarantine. The article appears in the weekly art market supplement "Incanti" and is part of a series titled "Messaggi artistici dalla quarantena."
