Artists Confront Global Conflict Through Documentary Projects in Israel, Palestine, and Liberia
In May 2014, Italian artist Valerio Rocco Orlando initiated his film project Interfaith Diaries while in residence at Artport in Tel Aviv, capturing dialogues among various religious groups in Israel and Palestine. His partnership with Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri persisted throughout the 2014 Gaza conflict and concluded with the residency in September 2014, with intentions to return in 2015. Meanwhile, Carlo Gabriele Tribbioli and Federico Lodoli showcased their film Fragment 53, Liberian Notes at the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva during the Biennale of Moving Images, featuring interviews with seven generals from the Liberian Civil War. Their project reflects on the repetitive nature of warfare and the influence of art on politics, echoing Theodor Adorno's 1962 essay 'Commitment.'
