Artists Against Gender Violence: A Global Movement

On November 25, 2018, Italy joins the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, established by the United Nations to combat femicide. The date commemorates the 1960 assassination of the Mirabal sisters, activists against Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. Red shoes, first used in 2009 by artist Elina Chauvet in a performance in Ciudad Juarez, have become a symbol for women killed by men. The 2018 campaign extends until December 10, following the #MeToo movement's impact on the art world, which ranked on Art Review's Power List 100. UN Women has called for increased commitment.
