Artist Sanmu Chen Detained in Hong Kong Ahead of Tiananmen Anniversary

artist · 2026-04-24

On June 3, 2024, Sanmu Chen, an artist from Hong Kong, was arrested just ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. He was spotted outside Causeway Bay station near Victoria Park, making the gesture of the numbers '8964' to represent June 4, 1989, and pretending to pour wine on the ground as a sign of respect. Although he was taken in by the police for supposedly creating a disturbance, they let him go without any charges. It’s worth noting that exactly a year earlier, on the same day, Chen had been detained for telling people not to fear and to remember June 4. Furthermore, six people were arrested the previous week for sedition concerning the massacre. Since 2020, the annual vigil at Victoria Park has been prohibited under Hong Kong's national security law.
