Artist Oracle Installed in Piazza San Marco for Venice Biennale

exhibition · 2026-04-28

During the 61st Venice Biennale, Spanish artist duo MITO (Enrique Baeza and Quim Bonastra) will install a public artwork titled 'Consultorio Mitologico' in Piazza San Marco. From May 8 to November 22, 2026, the work will be housed at the Hotel Monaco and Grand Canal. The installation is a functioning telephone booth where visitors can ask any question and receive a printed response—an ambiguous oracle-like message. Curated by Alex Brahim and Giovanna Cicutto, the project is promoted by Loffredo Foundation for Arts & Inclusion and Iconic Art System. MITO's practice examines how myths become naturalized as common sense, shaping contemporary imaginaries and authority. The work inverts the paradigm of instant answers from invisible systems, offering uncertainty instead. The curators note that each response follows a selection system introducing randomness: not everything is determined, but nothing is entirely arbitrary. The Venetian context amplifies the piece, with Piazza San Marco as a historic temple now hosting a contemporary oracle that interrogates the present rather than predicting the future.
