Artist Jonathan Grossmalerman expresses desire to leave gallery for Hauser & Wirth in 2013 opinion piece

opinion-review · 2026-04-20

In May 2013, artist Jonathan Grossmalerman revealed in an ArtReview opinion article that he is ending his decade-long association with gallery owner Maximilian Bingeweary due to creative disagreements. He explained that his latest series of large-scale artworks does not align with the gallery's resources, recalling a 2011 event where three staff members were injured by his piece 'Titties 3' (2010, oil on lead, 900 x 1800 cm). Grossmalerman is optimistic that Hauser & Wirth's New York location can showcase his seven-painting collection 'Clit Swell!', for which his assistant Neal has constructed a model. He expressed disappointment with Bingeweary, despite their friendship, and is currently waiting for a proposal from Hauser & Wirth.
