Artist Jewelry Takes Center Stage at Design Miami/Basel 2016

At Design Miami/Basel 2016, contemporary art jewelry gained prominence, with Swiss artist-jeweler David Bielander headlining the Design Talks. The fair showcased pieces from renowned artists like Lucio Fontana, Anish Kapoor, Jeff Koons, and Yinka Shonibare, presented by Louisa Guinness Gallery, and Ai Weiwei's first-ever jewelry piece—a 24-karat gold dotted bar that can be molded into a bracelet—offered by Elisabetta Cipriani. Other highlights included works by Gijs Bakker, whose provocative series "I Don't Wear Jewels, I Drive Them" was shown at Caroline Van Hoek, and German artists Daniel Kruger and Karl Fritsch, who subvert traditional jewelry iconography. Ornamentum Gallery focused on Gerd Rothmann's anatomical gold casts, while Antonella Villanova presented colorful pieces by Peter Chang and Monica Cecchi.
