Artist in Hotel Project: Tokyo's Park Hotel blends art and hospitality

Since 2012, the Park Hotel in Tokyo's Shiodome district has hosted the Artist in Hotel Project, where over 30 rooms are individually painted by contemporary artists. Each room interprets Japanese life, culture, and traditions, with works by artists such as Nobuo Magome (yokai supernatural beings), Yuki Ninagawa (Mount Fuji), and Hiroko Otake (cherry blossoms symbolizing the transience of beauty). Guests receive an explanation of the art upon arrival. The initiative earned the hotel a Japan Tourism Award. In 2015, the hotel collaborated with designer Yuima Nakazato, known for costumes in the film Lupin the Third (2014) and work with Lady Gaga, to create staff uniforms inspired by traditional Japanese garments. From March 12 to May 20, 2018, the hotel also hosts a solo exhibition by Yuji Kanamaru titled Wild Planet, part of a program offering about four exhibitions per year focused on local culture. In Italy, the Elizabeth Unique 5-star Art Hotel in Rome has opened, featuring site-specific installations and temporary works in rooms, curated by Galleria Russo. A dedicated app allows guests to view artworks on their own walls and facilitates sales.
