Artist-Designed Wine Labels: From Kusama to Penone
A recent survey highlights wineries that collaborate with artists for special edition labels. Donnafugata has partnered with Stefano Vitale since 1994 and held an exhibition in 2018. In November 2021, Barolo labels designed by Giuseppe Penone were auctioned for Fondazione CRC Donare. Giovanni Scucces' Artifera initiative connects SACCA gallery with Di Giovanna, Frasca, Quignones, and six artists. Since 1977, Castellare di Castellina has featured illustrations by John Gould. Caprai engaged Paolo Canevari for its Sagrantino label, while Masciarelli introduced an artist residency to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Nittardi has been creating artist labels since 1981, and Yayoi Kusama designed the 2012 La Grande Dame bottle for Veuve Clicquot. Château Mouton Rothschild has commissioned artists since 1924, including Olafur Eliasson for its 2019 label.
