Arthur Jafa's Largest Exhibition Opens at Louisiana Museum

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, presents the largest ever exhibition dedicated to African American artist Arthur Jafa (b. 1960). Spanning three decades, the show encompasses his multidisciplinary practice—film, installations, sculptures, and performances—that recontextualizes found footage to explore Black cultural and racial identity. Jafa aims to "replicate the power, beauty, and alienation of Black music" through cinema and music. Featured works include his latest, The White Album, which won the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, and his iconic Love is the Message, the Message is Death, a video collage condensing 400 years of Black history. Jafa has directed music videos for Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Solange Knowles, and Kanye West (2020's Wash Us in the Blood). The exhibition runs from December 9, 2020, to May 9, 2021.
