Arthur Duff's Light Cycles Illuminates Giro d'Italia Stages

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Arthur Duff (born 1973, Wiesbaden) created Light Cycles, a site-specific light installation project for the 105th edition of the Giro d'Italia cycling race, which runs from May 6 to May 29, 2022. Curated by Valentina Ciarallo and realized with support from Enel, the project features luminous word projections onto monuments in cities hosting race stages. The work debuted at MAXXI in Rome on April 6, 2022, during the presentation of the special 2022 Maglia Rosa jersey for Enel's 60th anniversary. Installations are scheduled at Palazzo del Municipio in Catania (May 9–11), Castel dell'Ovo in Naples (May 13–14), Palazzo della Pilotta in Parma (May 17–18), Palazzo Civico in Turin (May 20–21), and Palazzo Barbieri in Verona (May 28–29, final stage). Words such as Beginnings, Start, Light, Cycles, Corsa Terrena, Viva, and Power are projected using laser technology described by Ciarallo as "technologically archaic," creating pulsating, overlapping text with hypnotic rhythm. Duff, represented by Studio La Città gallery, explores the relationship between words and space, with light serving as a metaphorical transit for knowledge and energy.
