Arthur Bispo do Rosário's Legacy Gains Major Restoration and Institutional Support in Rio
Since late 2016, efforts have been underway to preserve the artistic contributions of Arthur Bispo do Rosário, which he developed over nearly five decades in psychiatric facilities in Rio de Janeiro. In September 2019, his collection received heritage designation from the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan). The Museu Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporânea is set to grow with a R$350,000 contribution from the Fundação Marcos Amaro (FMA) aimed at restoring a pavilion at the former Colônia Juliano Moreira hospital, which will include his old cell as a permanent exhibition. Previous funding from the FMA in 2017 and 2018 has supported Brazilian contemporary art. A significant conservation project, the largest for contemporary art in Brazil, is currently in progress, alongside the exhibition 'UTOPIAS.'
