Artestorie book maps art history careers in Italy

The volume "Artestorie. Le professioni della storia dell'arte," edited by Maria Stella Bottai, Silvia Cecchini, and Nicolette Mandarano, collects thirty personal accounts from art history graduates in Italy. Published in 2016 by Cisalpino Monduzzi Editoriale, the book aims to guide students transitioning from university to the job market. It challenges stereotypes about art history careers, showing that opportunities have expanded qualitatively despite the crisis, thanks to creativity and initiative. The book is structured into thematic chapters: education and research; museums and superintendencies; beyond the museum; works and images; and public engagement and analysis. It highlights the hybridization of the discipline beyond academia and museums, into companies, research centers, peripheries, and social contexts. Contributors emphasize the inverse relationship between professional competence and economic compensation, and the role of passion as a driving force. The book also addresses the lack of labor regulations and institutional resistance to innovation. It serves as both a career orientation tool and a policy analysis for reforming the cultural system. The project continues on a dedicated Facebook page. The editors quote Giovanna Capitelli and Anna Chiara Cimoli, among others, and the book includes a rich bibliography.
