Artes Mundi Prize Shortlist Reveals Six International Artists Competing for £40,000
Six artists from across the globe have been named as finalists for the Artes Mundi prize, recognized as the United Kingdom's most financially significant art award. Firelei Báez, representing the Dominican Republic, Dineo Seshee Bopape from South Africa, Japan's Meiro Koizumi, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz of Puerto Rico, India's Praphakar Pachpute, and Carrie Mae Weems from the United States are all contenders for the £40,000 fund. The winner will be selected in January 2021 by the same jury that chose the shortlist, a departure from previous years. Jurors include Cosmin Costinas, executive director of Para Site in Hong Kong; Elvira Dyangani-Ose, director of The Showroom gallery in London; and Rachel Kent, chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. An exhibition featuring the shortlisted artists is scheduled to open in September 2020. The announcement was made on 25 September 2019.
