Artemisia Gentileschi: 40 works in Paris museum show

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris presents 'Artemisia. Heroine of Art', the first monographic exhibition in the French capital dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome, 1593 – Naples, 1653). Curated by Patrizia Cavazzini, Maria Cristina Terzaghi, and Pierre Curie, the show features about forty paintings—27 signed by Artemisia and several recent attributions—alongside a dozen works by contemporaries including her father Orazio Gentileschi. The thematic, non-chronological layout spans eight sections covering her European success, her relationship with her father, Caravaggio's influence, her Florentine years, portraiture, and mythological/religious heroines. Highlights include 'Susanna and the Elders' (1610), 'Allegory of Inclination' (1615-1616) from Casa Buonarroti on loan outside Italy for the first time, and a 17th-century copy of 'Judith and Holofernes'. The exhibition also contextualizes Artemisia among female painters like Lavinia Fontana and Sofonisba Anguissola. Produced by Culturespace, the show runs until August 3, 2025.
